The Importance of Library Outreach

The Importance of Library Outreach

Reaching non-library users can be difficult, which is why outreach programs are so important. This will gradually build a connection with your community and strengthen the public image of the library.

Making a plan will be the first step in your outreach efforts. Set your intention for outreach and determine what is possible with the staff and resources you have. Involve as many staff as possible and find out what your community wants. Having staff keep outreach top of mind can open up any opportunities they come across.

Staff training is another important step. Ensuring all staff are on board with the expectations of service, have knowledge of the services offered and resources available to the library, and fully understanding the purpose and goals of the outreach is crucial.

Once your outreach plan is implemented you should see new patrons using the library and spreading the word about the services offered. Not only will your outreach activities provide value, but the value brought to new cardholders will be significant.

Here are some ideas for outreach, many Parkland libraries are doing these already!

  • Partnering with other non-profits in your community (you can make the biggest impact together!)
  • Homebound deliveries
  • External programming (going to a school or senior facility)
  • Bookmobile or book bike
  • Volunteering
  • Attending community events
