This glossary will guide you through some of the more common acronyms used in libraries. Read Part 1 of this series to brush up on common terms in the library world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALA:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> American Library Association<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALTA:<\/strong> Acronym for the <a href=\"https:\/\/librarytrustees.ab.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alberta Library Trustee\u2019s Association.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>APLAC:<\/strong> Acronym for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplac.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alberta Public Library Administrator\u2019s Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CCD:<\/strong> Parkland&#8217;s cooperative collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CELA:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/celalibrary.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Equitable Library Access<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CLA:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cla.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Library Association<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CLM:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/librarianship.ca\/features\/canadian-library-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Library Month<\/a> (October).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CVS:<\/strong> Acronym for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvsmidwesttape.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CVS Midwest Tape<\/a>, the vendor that Parkland has a purchasing agreement with for DVD\u2019s and audiobooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAISY:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/daisy.org\/activities\/standards\/daisy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Audio Information System<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DDC:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/esu.libguides.com\/dewey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dewey Decimal Classification<\/a> or Dewey Decimal System is a library classification system that allows books to be shelves according to their subject matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DEI: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inclusionhub.com\/articles\/what-is-dei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diversity, equity, and inclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FCSS:<\/strong> Acronym for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/family-and-community-support-services-fcss-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Family Community Support Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FOIP:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/freedom-of-information-and-protection-of-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ILS:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lucidea.com\/special-libraries\/the-integrated-library-system-ils-primer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrated Library Systems<\/a> are a software package that enables library staff to manage library resources and library users to access them. Specifically, an ILS consolidates a variety of components that enable core library service functions such as acquisitions (ordering, receiving, and invoicing for materials), cataloguing (classifying and indexing materials), searching (public interface for finding and requesting items), and circulation (lending materials to patrons and receiving them back).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ILL:<\/strong> An Interlibrary Loan is the transfer of print and non-print library materials, or a copy of those materials, from one participating library to another in response to a specific patron request. This may be done physically or electronically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ISBN:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/isbnsearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Standard Book Number<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LAA:<\/strong> Acronym for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraryassociationalberta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Library Association of Alberta<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LibPAS:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/ab.countingopinions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> online tool<\/a> used by the Public Library Services Branch to collect public library annual reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MARC:<\/strong> A library acronym that stands for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/marc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Machine Readable Cataloguing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MLIS:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/school-of-library-and-information-studies\/programs\/mlis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master of Library and Information Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MOOC:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mooc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Massive Open Online Course<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NNELS: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nnels.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The National Network for Equitable Library Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PLC:<\/strong> Acronym for Parkland Library Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PLSB:<\/strong> Acronym for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/public-library-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Library Services Branch<\/a> of the Government of Alberta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PLN:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/public-library-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Library Network<\/a>. A technological and operational framework that connects Alberta\u2019s public libraries to enable access to public library resources and services for Albertans. The network is coordinated and supported by PLSB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TAL:<\/strong> Acronym for <a href=\"https:\/\/thealbertalibrary.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Alberta Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ULS:<\/strong> Acronym for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Library Services<\/a>, the vendor that Parkland has a purchasing agreement with for books of various formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VDX:<\/strong> This stands for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VDX_(library_software)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virtual Document eXchange<\/a> and is an interlibrary loan software used by Alberta public libraries to borrow and lend library material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>YCW:<\/strong> Acronym for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/services\/funding\/young-canada-works.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young Canada Works<\/a>, a federal grant program to enable businesses and non-profits to hire students and young workers under 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Libraryland is full of unique terms and acronyms that can be confusing at times.
