Why are more brands than ever interested in engaging on social media? Because more than half\u00a0of the world\u2019s total population now uses social media.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/growth-quarters\/2020\/07\/21\/more-than-half-of-humanity-now-uses-social-media-heres-what-that-means-for-brands\/\" target=\"_blank\">3.96 billion people<\/a> use social media today, accounting for roughly 51% of the global population. This means that more people now use social media than do not, and that number is growing. There are almost 12 new users signing up for social media accounts every second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps because more people are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/368162\">working from home<\/a>, we&#8217;re seeing more interaction on social media. Clients want to do even more on social, because they see a connection between increasing visibility, engagement and sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be successful, it\u2019s not just about posting. It&#8217;s also about&nbsp;actually&nbsp;<em>engaging<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;you know, being social. That\u2019s a GOOD thing, because when you engage with your followers on social media, that\u2019s where the magic happens. That said, you can\u2019t always measure the value of social media,&nbsp;and brands need to get comfortable with that. A lot of the value comes from lurkers. Some studies say&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/michellegarrett.com\/2019\/05\/13\/embrace-your-social-media-lurkers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">up to 90% of your audience<\/a>&nbsp;may be lurkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my&nbsp;clients measures the value of its social media program&nbsp;based primarily on the fact that the executives at its parent company have noticed its efforts there \u2014 without \u201cliking\u201d or \u201csharing\u201d a thing \u2014&nbsp;and that makes it stand out from the other companies it owns (who aren\u2019t active on social media). It\u2019s a differentiator for my client.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019d like to be more active on social media, what can you or your brand do to be more engaging?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post consistently<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not enough to just have an account. You should post regularly. It\u2019s disappointing to look up a company on social media only to find it hasn\u2019t posted in a year. If you need help with consistent posts,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/280707#!\">tools like\u00a0Buffer<\/a>\u00a0can be preloaded with content\u00a0that you can schedule to post on your behalf. And remember that you don\u2019t need to be active on\u00a0<em>every<\/em>\u00a0social media platform. That\u2019s just setting yourself up to be overwhelmed. Choose the ones where your audience spends most of its time, and focus on those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interact with others on social media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to follow other colleagues and industry leaders on social media, and respond to their posts. If they comment on yours, be sure to acknowledge that. On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/events\/event\/178\">Twitter or LinkedIn<\/a>, for example, you can engage in some thought-provoking conversations and obtain\u00a0so much valuable information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curate content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s better to curate some of the content you post from other sources. If you only post content created by your organization, your followers are bound to get tired of you constantly talking about only yourself. Instead, spend a little time each day or week checking trusted sources of information like blogs, trade publications and news outlets for stories that might be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/334866\">relevant to your audience<\/a>. Add your brief take on each, and voila, you have some great content to add to your feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask a question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pose a question to your followers to help spur activity. You can also use a poll to engage your audience. This can help start conversations and help you learn more about your audience. Additionally, you\u00a0can ask people for their opinions on a specific topic, pose hypothetical questions, or even host a Q&amp;A session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start a Twitter chat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t stress enough&nbsp;how much I\u2019ve gotten from Twitter chats. I\u2019ve met people, made friends, found collaborators, stayed on top of trends, located sources for articles I\u2019m writing&nbsp;and learned from every chat I\u2019ve participated in. I found them so valuable, in fact, that I even started my own (#FreelanceChat). Participants look forward to \u201cseeing\u201d people at the chats they&nbsp;frequent \u2014&nbsp;it\u2019s one place they\u2019re sure to run into each other. Now, Twitter has rolled out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-twitter\/communities\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Communities<\/a>, which, in Twitter\u2019s words, \u201cgive people a dedicated place to connect, share, and get closer to the discussions they care about most.\u201d And in this time of greater isolation for many, community matters more than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0pay off for your business, if you\u2019re willing to interact and engage there.
