{"id":1881,"date":"2019-10-15T14:23:18","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T20:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/support.prl.ab.ca\/?p=1881"},"modified":"2019-10-15T14:27:53","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T20:27:53","slug":"customers-community-and-why-language-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/support.prl.ab.ca\/index.php\/2019\/10\/15\/customers-community-and-why-language-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Customers, community, and why language matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you\u2019ve worked in libraries for any length of time, you\nmay have encountered a discussion about what to call the individuals who use\nlibrary services. Patrons, customers, and users are the most common. And yet,\nnone of them seems to be quite right, to adequately define the relationship\nbetween the library as service provider and the people who benefit from those\nservices. Many libraries have adopted the term customer, perhaps because it\naligns with our customer-focused service model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But language does matter. In his blog post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ned-potter.com\/blog\/the-real-c-word-is-community\">The Real\nC-Word is Community<\/a>, academic and marketing librarian Ned Potter raises a\nthoughtful point. \u201cWhen we call people customers, they see themselves as\ncustomers \u2013 and if I\u2019m your library\u2019s customer I need your library to work for <strong>me<\/strong>. For me\nspecifically. I want you to meet all of my requirements even if this creates\ninequalities with my peers\u2026. This is instantly at odds with the ethos we try\nand create in academic libraries, which is one of community. While a customer\nneeds the library to work for them, an academic community of library users\nneeds it to work for <em>everyone<\/em>.\nIndeed, they need to actively contribute to that process of successfully\nsharing community space, using community resources, and working towards\ncommunity ideals.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/politicsandpolicy\/dont-call-me-a-customer-public-services\/\">Catherine Needham<\/a>, Professor of Public Policy and Public Management at the University of Birmingham, notes that \u201c<strong>The language of customer is individualising.<\/strong> It focuses on what you want to get out of public services, not on the broader collective goals of those services, which are often public in the first place because they are about shared and equal access to a good life.\u201d By referring to individual users as customers, do we create an environment in which library services are viewed as purely transactional in nature? And can we still be attentive to the needs of individuals if we don\u2019t call them customers? Years of struggling to choose the right term to refer to users of library services indicates these are not easy questions to answer. In considering them, we may be prompted to ask even more philosophical questions. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who does the public library serve? Do we serve any number of individual users or do we serve an entire community? And, if we view the whole community as the library\u2019s customer, does that influence how we think about serving all the individuals within that community? Ned Potter reminds us that \u201clanguage matters so much.
