Movie Licenses

Show Movies at your Library

A public performance license is required in order to show films in any public setting, including public libraries. In Canada there are two main providers of public performance licenses, each representing different film studios:

  • Criterion Pictures: Subscriptions run from November – October, and cannot be pro-rated. Fees vary based on the size of your community and the type of license you select (home-release, pre-release or pre-release+on-demand). No reporting is necessary with a Criterion license. The list of Studios/Producers licensed by Criterion for public performance can be found at: http://www.criterionpic.com/CPL/lcl_studiosproducers_new.html
  • Audio-Ciné Films (ACF): Subscriptions run from September 15th – September 14th, but may be pro-rated. Fees vary based on the type of license you select (basic or basic + streaming). Basic license covers physical media (DVD and Blu-Ray), and streaming allows libraries to view movies anywhere within their location without the hassle of physical copies. License reports of what movies have been shown must be submitted quarterly (Dec 15, March, 15, June 15, September 15). Reporting can be done online or by filling in the fillable pdf on the Audio Ciné website and mail/fax.
To see the full list of producers, check the ACF website: http://acf-film.com – click ‘Partner Studios.’

Please note:
• Outdoor movie events are not covered by this license, these events must procure a separate license.
• Libraries are not permitted to charge admission but may ask for donations or may raise funds through concession sales at the event.
• Paid advertising (radio, TV, or newspaper) is not permitted.
