Managing a large print collection can be expensive and take up too much space. The average large print books cost $28.14 while a regular book would be $15.97. Parkland has taken on managing and housing a large print collection for libraries, so you don’t have to!
There are many reasons why a patron would want to read large print. According to this blog post from Gale.com, the combination of larger font and fewer words on a page helps with decoding, tracking, fluency, and reading comprehension. The format can be helpful for people frustrated with reading, learning the English language, or with dyslexia and ADHD. Reading large print can build confidence and create passionate life-long readers.
Parkland will send out bins of 25 items to participating libraries. Libraries can note if they would like Christian, general, juvenile, mixed, mystery, non-fiction, romance, or western titles depending on their communities needs. Libraries can also specify how many bins they would prefer, and the interval that the bins will be sent. The books will remain at the requesting library until they are sent back to Parkland.
Library staff can access promotional materials for large print in the Q Drive marketing folder.
