Coalition of Alberta Public Libraries (CAP) Resources and Information

Resources and templates created by CAP can be found by library staff here: Q:\Bill 28. Updates and documents are emailed to Library Managers, Library Board Chairs, and Parkland’s Board as they come. Board members or library staff who do not receive these communications should reach out to their library manager or board chair with questions or requests for information.

CAP working groups

Policy Group
Created the governance policy template (available here: Q:\Bill 28) for library boards to use as a starting point. CAP hosted two webinars to further explain these documents and answer any questions.
• Memo – Context on the policy and how to use it
• Governance policy template – Ready for your library to adapt and adopt
• Policy framework decision register – A record of the decisions behind the policy template

Identifying Works Group
Has created the Recommendations for the Identification and Management of Restricted Materials document (available here: Q:\Bill 28). This includes potential procedure options for the most efficient and effective ways to identify restricted works. The group has completed an environmental scan of Alberta libraries, APLAC, and select U.S. jurisdictions, and identified an initial set of higher-risk formats (graphic novels, manga, DVDs/films, TV series, and video games).

Managing Materials Group
Recommendations are included in the Recommendations for the Identification and Management of Restricted Materials document. These include ideas for holds management, naming of collection, and physical collection separation.

Communications
Templates and other supporting materials are under development.
The Coalition of Alberta Public Libraries website has great resources that communicate the value of libraries and intellectual freedom, Bill 28, and the need for funding increases.
CAP social media channels are actively promoting the value of libraries and intellectual freedom.
