Improving physical accessibility in our public library spaces

Improving physical accessibility in our public library spaces

Have you ever looked at your library from the perspective of a person with a disability?

This was a topic of discussion at the recent Public Library Services Branch symposium on diversity and accessibility in public libraries. That’s where we learned about Voices of Albertans with Disabilities, who can conduct an accessibility assessment and provide professional feedback on how your particular space can be made more accessible. While there is a charge for the service, they provide a thorough report that includes spaces such as bathrooms, entrances, and parking.

The Edmonton based Voice of Albertans with Disabilities can be reached by email (accessibility@vadsociety.ca) and phone (780-488-9088) or visit their website at https://vadsociety.ca/ and click on the Services tab to learn about their various consultations and training.
